Adult Drama: Playwriting

Wednesdays 6pm-7.30pm at the Playing Field Studio, City

This six-week course is designed for adults of all ages who are interested in exploring the fun and exhilarating art of writing for the stage. Participants will work through a range of prompts, activities and writing briefs to develop their ideas and work with guest actors to see their original pieces come to life on stage. Participants with performance interests are encouraged to perform their own work or the work of others across the course. Refreshments are provided in classes and the final show will be followed by complementary wine and cheese for participants and their guests. This course is suitable for beginners and is an ideal introduction to the Canberra theatre scene.

Course outline
•    Wednesday 28th February – What is a dramatic text? Writing prompt activities: monologue
•    Wednesday 7th March – Developing the pieces: narrative arc, register, stage directions.
•    Wednesday 14th March – Workshop with guest actors performing pieces; feedback session
•    Wednesday 21st March – Writing a sketch or short play – drawing on inspirational examples
•    Wednesday 28th March – Development and polishing: the WOW factor
•    Wednesday 4th April – Rehearsal followed by final public performance with guest actors

•    Write at least one new sketch/short play/scene from a full-length play
•    Work with an actor to realise your vision
•    Give and receive constructive feedback
•    Reflect on the influences on your work
•    Develop your writing process, working to deadlines
•    Find writing inspiration in everyday life
