Join us in Term 3 2019 for a fantastic production of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST! If your child loves the classic tale, they will love this course!
Written by playwright Kirsty Budding especially for the performers who join this course and taught by professional actor and popular drama tutor Rob Shiells, this course is ideal for young performers ages 5-12 who wish to challenge themselves, develop confidence, learn lines and have an amazing time developing a production inspired by the French fairytale Beauty and the Beast made popular by Disney. All Budding Theatre plays are original comedic adaptations of traditional stories adapted for each class of performers; there will also be musical elements in the play so children interested in singing/dance will have an opportunity to contribute in this way too!
There are a great range of roles for both boys and girls and all performers in the course receive a character role and lines. All Budding Theatre term classes end with a FREE public performance in a theatre venue as part of Showcase Day.
FINAL SHOW IS FIRST DAY OF THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS so this course is only suitable for young performers who will not be away and are available on the evening of Monday 30th September.
In this nine week drama course for children, students will:
audition for roles in BEAUTY & THE BEAST (an amazing range of roles)
learn lines for their roles and line-learning strategies (which also helps with reading skills and vocabulary!)
be directed and learn performance skills including use of stage space, expression, gesture, vocal projection, timing and characterisation.

Frequently Asked Questions
HOW DOES THE AUDITION WORK?
Upon enrolment, all performers receive a monologue to learn (this is sent to parent/guardian via email). There is also a short version for very young or new performers. All performers will perform the same monologue at the first class after engaging in drama games and orientation activities to build confidence. This is designed to be a fun, supportive and stress-free introduction to auditioning and acting, with all performers guaranteed a speaking role in the production.
HOW ARE ROLES ASSIGNED?
Roles and scripts are emailed to parents/guardians between the Week 1 and Week 2 class. This is because the script is tailored to the strengths of the group as seen in the audition. Parents/guardians print the script and help their child highlight their lines, then performers arrive to the Week 2 class with their scripts excited and ready to rehearse.
WHERE DO CLASSES TAKE PLACE?
Playing Field Studio, corner of Barry Drive & Kingsley St, Acton.
Enter via Canberra Dance Theatre.
IS IT SUITABLE FOR BEGINNERS?
This course is suitable for beginners and more experienced performers. There will be a range of roles with various levels of challenge catering to individual performers.
ARE THERE ANY PRE-REQUISITES?
Performers must be fully committed to learning their lines at home.
Distinct costumes are provided by the company as required; parents must be happy to provide generic items e.g. a t-shirt of a certain colour and do their child’s hair/makeup if required before the final show (a guide is sent to all parents).
